"Student Personality and Instrumental Participation, Continuation, and Choice."

Cutietta, R.A. and McAllister, P.A. (1997). "Student Personality and Instrumental Participation, Continuation, and Choice." Journal of Research in Music Education 45(2), 282-288

This journal article examines the connections between student personality traits and their instrument choices. It also discusses an array of personality traits and links them to specific types or styles of music.

"Research has recently pointed to the role that personality plays in many aspects of the musical experience. For example, preferences for certain types of music have been found to be correlated with specific personality types. In these studies, many correlations were found between diverse personality traits and musical styles. This body of research reveals, for example, that correlations exist between aggressive-type personality traits and a preference for heavy metal music."
