This journal article covers a study done in 1993 that surveyed about 900 middle school students about their instrument selection in band or orchestra classes in middle school.
"Almost all instrumental music instructors have had students drop out of a program because the students ostensibly disliked the instrument they were playing."

This is where the music teacher has to use his skills and allocate children the musical instruments on a rotational basis, so that each children will be playing different instruments on different occasions.
