Smyth, P. (1975). Learning through the language of drama: some questions. In Stephenson, N. & Vincent, D. (Eds.), Teaching and understanding drama (46-60). Windsor, Berkshire: NFER Publishing company.
Smyth examines the type of learning that takes place when a group of students is asked to retell a play in their own words through improvisation multiple times. Specifically the author examines the students' use of language and overall ability to make meaning from the original text. The author ends by exploring the possible relationship between the learning that takes place in 'free form' improvisation and Voygotsky's 'inner speech.'
