A Pilot Study of the Efficacy of Two Adult Basic Literacy Programs for Incarcerated Males

Shippen, Margaret E., (2008, December). A Pilot Study of the Efficacy of Two Adult Basic Literacy   Programs for Incarcerated Males. The Journal of Correctional Education, 59(4), 339-347.

This article compares the effects of two popular adult reading programs: Laubach vs. Direct Instruction Corrective Reading Decoding. The participants of the study were male students reading below a 5th grade level that were incarcerated  in an Alabama prison. After a six month period of instruction, Shippen (2008) found that, "Results indicated that neither program was superior, though all participants significantly improved in one or more area of the basic literacy" (p.399).
